proFagus takes responsibility

We not only make sure that the manufacture of our charcoal products is resource-efficient and sustainable, but we are also actively engaged in many areas that help environmental protection and sustainability.

The raw material for our beech grilling charcoal products comes from sustainably managed German forests and the whole production process is designed for resource efficiency. With our unique retort process, we use over 99.9 % of the beechwood. Because waste is not our thing.

Committed to nature.
Connected to people.

Our three pillars
of sustainability

Nature itself is our most important resource. This gives rise to a particular responsibility, which we bear with pride and passion.

As part of society, we feel obligated to our region and the people who live here. We align our actions with the criteria of sustainability.

Ecology

We use resources carefully.

To protect the rainforests, our charcoal is free from tropical wood. Imported material from the tropics often comes from overfelling and illegal forest clearances – massive environmental damage is accepted with reckless disregard. Its transport around half the globe is one more thing that contributes towards the catastrophic life cycle assessment of imported charcoal.

Economy

We produce efficiently.

The grilling charcoal from proFagus is produced under optimized conditions – for high-quality charcoal free from harmful byproducts. The surety for this: its production in the retort process (Degussa process) with multiple certifications.

Social commitment

We take responsibility.

Charcoal has been produced in Bodenfelde since 1896. Today, approx. 150 employees are involved in our proFagus products. We feel responsible for them, their families, and our region.

CO₂-negative:
Namely, in the whole process

We are a reliable partner for premium grilling charcoal products from southern Lower Saxony and stand for sustainability, and responsibility for the environment.

On the one hand, 99.9 % of the substances produced during the charring are reused and on the other hand, we support renewable electricity from Germany. As a result, we achieve a negative carbon footprint, which also includes use of the products as grilling charcoal by consumers. Since 2022, we have therefore been the first CO₂-negative biorefinery in Europe.

Unlike natural gas, no CO₂ is emitted when our grilling charcoal is burned. Because by using the natural raw material wood, the CO₂ produced comes from nature’s carbon cycle, which we use in the form of regional residual beechwood from the thinning of certified forests and untreated residual wood from the wood-based panel industry: Not one extra tree is felled. The wood comes from a radius of maximum 150 km around the proFagus plant in Bodenfelde.

Our purity requirements

Our goal is to create the best and purest products. We therefore use the environmentally-friendly retort process. By extracting gas, acids, and tar during carbonization, all that remains in the retorts is charcoal with a very high carbon content. The separated extracts are cleaned and passed through a complex process to form high-quality products such as acetic acid, creosote, breeze and proFagus Pure Smoke.

We have no classic waste

We reduce our waste to a minimum. All our grilling charcoal products are also free from harmful byproducts.

Byproducts produced during the charring process, such as tar and acids, are filtered out and are processed further to produce our high-quality biochemicals acetic acid, tar oil, breeze and proFagus smoke flavorings. Thus, only around 0.06 % process-related waste is produced, which is disposed of properly.
